The pharmaceutical packaging industry is constantly changing. New technology and regulations routinely alter the pharma landscape, and packaging equipment suppliers must stay innovative to meet the needs of customers.
Here are two pharmaceutical packaging trends we’ve seen here at Weiler Labeling Systems (WLS) and the solutions we’ve developed to address them:
1) Growing Market for Medical Devices
International sales of medical devices are expected to reach $543.9 billion by 2020, driven by an aging population, increasing healthcare expenditure and technology advancements.
At WLS, we’ve seen a substantial increase in the demand for auto-injector labelling. Auto-injectors come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and our Horizontal Roller (HR) in-line trunnion labeler excels in their consistent and precise labeling.
Applying pressure sensitive labels onto round and nearly round products, the HR labeler features a horizontal roller track that references the container sidewall and is combined with a vacuum drum label application. The HR can be designed to orient the auto-injector prior to labeling. Variable data, including a serialized code, can be printed on the label prior to application. The printed code is verified by a camera and an ‘Interceptor’ option can be provided to remove a rejected label prior to labeling.

2) Increased Need for Production Versatility
Product manufacturers and contract packers are asking for more and more production versatility. They need packaging systems that can adapt quickly to different applications, types of packages and more.
This trend is perfectly exemplified by our Autonomy digital label printer, an on-demand, stand-alone solution that eliminates the need to inventory distinct labels for each product without sacrificing speed or quality. It gives provides more flexibility when numerous label SKUs are required for multiple products in different markets. Featuring drop-on-demand printing and UV-curing capabilities, it can print high-impact visual graphics in full color or black-and-white as well as linear barcodes, serialized 2D data matrix barcodes and human readable codes.
Ideal for many applications, Autonomy is suitable for printing variable data on pre-printed labels as well as on-demand printing the entire label from ‘bright stock.’ Print changes are quickly made via the HMI, and label styles can be changed in less than five minutes. The Autonomy enables end-users to manage regulation changes and access new markets quicker.
